Cyclomaniacs stands alone among bike games for its sheer level of polish and production value. It’s no secret that these games are usually made by starving college students with little more than a good idea and a little programming knowledge, so we forgive a lot in these games.
In Cyclomaniacs, you don’t need to look at it with that mindset. Rather, Cyclomaniacs is just a good, well made game through and through. The physics, so lacking in many games, are subtly implemented and a lot of fun to use in this game to pull off tricks and jumps. The game has a certain fast momentum to it, a nice, brisk pace that keeps it fun to play in short doses but allows you to spend an hour racing if you like, as well.
Combining your favorite parts of other racing games and stunt riding games, Cyclomaniacs finishes it all off with a layer of polish and artfulness. You have a wide range of characters to play as for instance, including Elvis Presley, Mr. T and Laurel and Hardy lookalikes. You’ll be racing against a couple dozen other racers at a time, all of them with their own riding style. The artificial intelligence behavior is really above and beyond what you typically see here. The other riders pull off stunts, they jump, they make mistakes sometimes, and it makes the game feel more natural and fun.
The music is nice and breezy, the art design is colorful and creative and the game itself is addictive, challenging and fun. Using the money from the races to upgrade your bike, unlocking the other characters and progressing through the game is fun not just for a browser game, but for any game, period. Cyclomaniacs is something truly special in the browser game scene. Give it a try and see if you agree.
